Being In The Moment

Most people would consider opening a large clinic at the age of 55 to be a crazy idea. However, over the years and with the amount of experience that I have gained from my clinical practice and my business practice, it has become clear to me that I prioritize a high-quality therapeutic care.

In the therapeutic relationships that I have developed with my patients over the 30 years in practice, it was been apparent to me that patients always appreciated my sense of honesty, my commitment to their health and wellness, and most importantly my ability to “be in the moment” in their care.

It's easy to get caught up in the busyness of a days work and sometimes the patient gets shuffled through the process without being given the opportunity to have the provider be “in the moment”. Well what does that mean? Have you ever been in clinic and they ask you something that you just told them or they cut you off while you are trying to explain something important to you. It's not that they're not providing the best level of care but they lack the time to be in the moment and they are prioritizing time management over the importance of a patient’s moment in time in clinic. It does not mean that a provider must give extended or unlimited time during a clinical appointment - it’s bigger than that. It’s an essence and beyond the care “tasks”. It’s when the provider decides to take a breath…… and be connected in the patient therapeutic relationship.

Sometimes being in the moment could be an additional phone call to see how a patient is doing after a procedure or treatment recommendation.

Sometimes being in the moment is a scheduled appointment where all the care provider does is listen because the patient needs that more than a procedure or treatment.

And ….Sometimes being in the moment is the provider allowing themselves to show emotion and empathy to the patient as they express their grief.

To some, it may seem unprofessional as a provider to show emotion but in my opinion it is the essence of caring and the reason that I became a Nurse Practitioner.

I hope all patients experience this level of care when they enter KRTC and that the provider at either the therapeutic clinic or the medical aesthetic clinic are able to be “in the moment” during the appointment.
